One can literally and figuratively lose oneself in food. The alimentary flavor that is at one level, merely a means of enabling us to live out our lives in the means we choose, in effect to live, is at another level, important enough to be one of the most powerful memes - one that has caused explorers to travel to new lands, armies to pause for a bite, and cultures to grow, mutate and flower in original ways, thereby enabling the individuals that constitute those cultures to express the flavor of the culture, and the food.
That's one expression of culture.
